What is LCD Monitor?
LCD is a type of flat panel display technology used in various electronic devices like televisions, computer monitors, smartphones, and calculators.
LCD Monitor screens make use of Liquid Crystal Display technology. The screen is embedded with liquid crystals, a substance that has properties in between a conventional liquid and a solid crystal. Liquid crystals can flow, but their molecules carry a crystal-like solid orientation.
Liquid crystals are responsible for producing an image flashed onto the LCD screen. They don’t emit light, though. Backlights are used to illuminate these crystals.
A display screen is made up of several tiny color blocks called pixels. The term is a portmanteau of “picture” and “element”, denoting pixels as little elements making up an entire screen picture. A screen is typically made up of millions of pixels.
Every pixel on the display screen is made up of red, blue, and green light. These lights can be quickly turned on or off to create an overall moving picture or image.
Now, in LCD Monitor, pixels are regulated by using liquid crystals for rotating polarized light. Polarized light denotes light waves with vibrations occurring in a single plane. In LCDs, this is achieved by using polarized layers.
Each pixel has polarizing filters on both its front and back. Tiny nematic (twisted) liquid crystals are placed in between these filters. The liquid crystals can be switched on or off electronically through tiny electronic transistors.
When the liquid crystal is turned off, electricity controlled by the transistor stops flowing. The pixel is then turned on, brightening up due to the 90-degree twisting of the nematic liquid crystal. This allows light to pass through both polarizing filters on the pixel, illuminating the pixel by letting light pass through.
When the liquid crystal is turned on, electricity flows through the nematic liquid crystals. They completely straighten out from their twisted state. The polarizing filter in front of the liquid crystal blocks out the light, resulting in the pixel turning off and becoming dark.
A single LCD contains millions of pixels, nematic liquid crystals, polarizing filters, and transistors. They all work together to create images on the screen.
The Chemistry Of Lcd Monitor
Liquid Crystal
Liquid crystal is a state of matter that has a crystal-like molecular structure. It allows light to pass through when it needs to and when it doesn’t it blocks the light. It is good for displays because in the liquid crystal state light gets organized from the liquid crystal and prints out a very crisp looking picture. It was first discovered in 1888 by Friedrich Reinitzer. The first time liquid crystal was used in displays was in 1962. The reason that liquid crystal is used in displays is because it allows the monitor to be thinner compared to CRTs (those big bulky “old school” tvs). It is allowed to be thinner because instead of projecting light onto the screen it just organizes light that is already there. Another reason it is used in displays is because it requires less power to run than a CRT. You can find Liquid crystal in Liquid Crystal Displays or LCDs.
Polarizer
Polarizers work by only allowing light that is moving the same way that it is made. So only vertical light can go through vertical polarizers and vice versa for horizontal polarizers. Polarizers are basically a very small grid that is used for cameras and displays. They are very good at lining up light and giving smooth results. They were first developed in 1929 by Edwin H. Land. Their main purpose is for cameras when they were first invented but now they are used in displays also. The reason that they are more commonly used in displays now is because they require less power to run. Instead of turning light on and off inside of a monitor, they just line up the light that is already there. It is a perfect for liquid crystal displays because when the light passes through the liquid crystal it flips it 90 degrees so it can go through the second polarizer. Always in LCDs the polarizers are 90 degrees of each other.
Liquid crystal composite
Liquid crystals can be man made and they can also be apart of nature. One example of liquid crystal in nature is spider webs. When they push it out, the silk is liquidy but it then turns into a solid. An example of a lab made liquid crystal is Vanadium(V) oxide. It is made by taking a vanadium rich ore and is mixed with Na2CO3. This produces NaVO3. The ph is raised on this to about 2 to 3 using H2SO4. This creates a precipitate which is heated to 690 oC which gives the final product V2O5. The chemistry involved with liquid crystal is using the proper amount of heat/electricity to get the liquid crystal state.
Polarizer composite
Polarizers were originally made of microscopic herapathite crystals but now they are made of polyvinyl alcohol plastic with iodine doping. With polarizers, the chemistry is all about allowing light to pass through and reflecting light that isn’t aligned with it. If the polarizer is off centered or isn’t rotated 90 degrees to the other one there will be a blurry if not black picture.
The Four Elements Needed For An Lcd Display
The Panel
Ultimately the panel is a large piece of grey glass or polymer sheet which dims the pixels. There are many different ways it can do this but the polarization layer is the method used in all the LCD displays today. Light always travels in a certain direction, but it can be rotated along the way, this rotation of light waves is called polarization.
In LCD displays there is such a thing as a polarizing filter. This filter will only let light through that is angled, or polarized, at a certain angle.
LCD displays have two polarizing filters behind each other both attached to a glass sheet. Between the polarizing filters are liquid crystals which have the quality of bending light. So, in an LCD display light comes from the backlight and hits the first polarizing filter. It then passes through the liquid crystals where the light is bent a certain amount before it passes through the second polarizing filter.
The liquid crystals can actually be controlled with voltage. The amount of voltage used decides how much light is bent and stopped by the second polarizing filter. This is how voltage controls the light traveling through the panel. But for a working LCD display, you need light waves which is where the backlight comes in.

The Backlight
The backlight to an LCD display is the source of light, it needs to be white because the emitter delivers light to all subpixels, which are red, green and blue. This white light is usually produced by either CCFLs or LEDs. CCFLs produce fluorescent light using mercury and LEDs don’t and so are much greener.
Both CCFLs and LED have a downside. They are both either point or line light sources. The light however needs to be distributed over a much larger surface and so LCD displays use diffusing and reflecting layers. Diffusers spread the light beams to cover the area they need to light up. Light then travels through a series of unevenly spaced bumps after which the diffused light either travels forward to the actual LCD panel or back. When diffused light travels back it hits a reflector. A reflecting layer guides otherwise wasted diffused light back towards the LCD display panel. A reflecting layer helps increase efficiency of the LCD display.
Power Supply
An LCD display requires voltages that are not usually available in the average building and so a power convertor is needed.
The main voltage is converted to intermediate DC voltage, usually between 12 and 24V. The power flow then separates to the backlight and the microelectronics. The 5V for the display’s electronics is once again divided into two going to the LVDS receiver and the bias driver.
Micro-electronics
Inside an LCD display you will find the micro-electronics which are the electronics involved in signal processing. They usually split up into two functions – the video signal receiver and the panel driver.

Advantages Of Lcd Monitor
Energy Efficient
LCDs are known for their energy-efficient properties. They still require power to illuminate their respective pixels, but LCDs consume less power than non-LCD devices. When compared to cathode-ray tube (CRT), for example, a typical LCD will use about 25% less power. As a result, LCDs offer cost-savings benefits in the form of cheaper utility bills. You’ll pay less in utility expenses if you choose an LCD over a non-LCD device, making it a smart investment.
Long-Lasting
Another advantage of LCDs is their ability to last for a very long time. LCDs typically don’t last forever, but they have a longer lifespan than that of other display devices. A typical LCD may last for up to 60,000 hours. Depending on how frequently you use it, that may translate into 20 or more years of usage. CRT displays, on the other hand, have a much shorter lifespan.
LED Backlighting
LCDs support backlighting with light-emitting diode (LED). LED, in fact, is the most common type of backlighting used in their construction. To illuminate their respective pixels, LCDs need backlighting. LED backlighting has become the preferred choice among manufacturers because it’s both effective and energy efficient. The LED bulbs are placed in the back of the LCD where they illuminate the liquid pixels from behind.
No Screen Burn-In
You don’t have to worry about screen burn-in with LCDs. Screen burn-in is a phenomenon that only occurs in display devices with phosphor-based pixels. Traditional CRTs fall under this category because their pixels are made of phosphor compounds. LCDs, however, use pixels made of organic material, so they don’t suffer from screen burn-in. You can leave a static image on an LCD for multiple consecutive hours without fear of it “burning” into the display.
Supports Small and Low-Profile Sizes
LCD devices come in all shapes and sizes. While some of them are large, others are small with a narrow and low-profile design. Smartphones and tablets, for example, often use LCD technology. It allows for small and low-profile designs that isn’t possible with other, older display technologies.
